Call an alpaca ranch and ask if you can drop by for a visit (Alpaca people are the best people. They always say yes.). Bring a football and a frisbee. Travel offseason (Have you had a campfire on the beach? Magical.). Hike with your baby in a backpack and master the standing diaper change. Swim in rivers and lakes and community pools. Borrow, garage sale, or thrift for camping gear. Rent a canoe. Have your teens create themed playlists for the road (John Denver, obviously). Make memories in spooky, ramshackle cabins. Use public transit. Visit a local church on Sunday morning and stay for the fish fry. Ask for behind-the-scenes tours at factories, capitols, and parks. Buy from roadside fruit stands and taco trucks.

Don't wait until your kids are "old enough to appreciate it" or the perfect age. Or until you can afford to fly. Or until you have all the right gear.
