I’ve missed out on plenty of cult classics. For the most part I usually knew what they were about or even saw bits and pieces of a few of them growing up. Except for this particular movie. I had been so shielded from it my entire life that I could say I truly didn’t have a clue what it was even about. Truly not a clue. Until last night.

I sat and watched an incredible piece of art. Within 20 minutes I knew why that particular film had been strictly forbidden. It was exactly the kind of film that would ignite in me what was already doused in lighter fluid. It was exactly the kind of film that if I were to have watched it would have radicalized me in a way only the church could rebuke. It was exactly the kind of film that my caregivers feared with everything inside them would corrupt their sweet innocent little girl. Funny part is I never saw the film they so adamantly protected me from. Yet I still deconstructed every ounce of regurgitated programming I had been force fed my whole life. All on my own. All against the current that is the Bible Belt.

As I watched, the sexiest version of Tim Curry I had ever seen glide out of that elevator and begin to sing about being a “Sweet Transvestite,” I couldn’t help but giggle. I giggled at the thought of my caregivers watching this very same movie, decades before this, and the looks on their faces. Just giggled. I would have welcomed this film into my roster of favorites, with open arms, as a child. I would have found safety, acceptance, and art. Thankfully “protecting” your kids from the “evils” of this world, in the form of demonizing every single thing you consider to be “of the devil,” doesn’t keep those rebellious kids from finding their way out of the programming. We find our way out. Claw our way out. Then, they get to see the dazzling Tim Curry in the performance of a lifetime, at the ripe old age of 38 and giggle.
