“Cycling works when it connects the home to the school, the doctor, the restaurants, the shops, and everything in between.”
The DCE’s Chris Bruntlett sat down with Paolo Barbato of Wiseair to speak about what Italy can learn from the Dutch cycling model.
He highlighted a key lesson: cycling works when cities build networks, not just isolated bike lanes. That means safe routes that connect homes, schools, shops, doctors, stations and workplaces.

🚗🅿️ Parking: The Silent Killer of Better Cities
We talk about traffic. We talk about bike lanes. We talk about transit.
But the biggest thing holding our cities back is… parking.
Here’s some facts👇
📏 It eats up massive amounts of land — in some cities, half of the public space is just for storing cars.
💸 It drains public budgets — every “free” parking space costs thousands to build and maintain.
🚫 It kills walkability — pushing buildings apart and making every trip a car trip.
🚌 It blocks better transit — you can’t run great buses or trams where density is replaced by parking lots.
🌍 And the more parking you build, the more people drive. Simple as that.
If we want cleaner air, safer streets, better mobility, and real public space…
We need to stop letting parking rule our cities.
A great city isn’t the one with the most parking spots —
it’s the one where people don’t need one.

“If you invite more cars, you get more cars...If you invite people to walk more and use public spaces more, you get more life in the city. You get what you invite.” - Jan Gehl

On Wednesday, May 20 at 7 p.m., the Ride of Silence will traverse the globe. Cyclists in their local time zones will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Join the gathering in Davis at The Bike Collective, on 4th Street, near L Street.

🚶♂️🚲 Embracing walkability and bikes is key for shaping vibrant and sustainable cities! 🌆 In the realm of the Integrated Modification Methodology (IMM), these elements play a crucial role in enhancing urban mobility, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering healthier communities.
By prioritizing walkable streets and bike-friendly infrastructure, we pave the way for cleaner air, healthier lifestyles, and more connected neighborhoods. Let’s pedal towards a future where walking and biking are integral parts of our urban landscape, promoting not just transportation but also well-being and environmental stewardship!
