Funny how certain activities are seen as feminine until you start getting paid for it. Imagine a hobbyist cook or photographer and the mental image will likely be female, but the professional tops of the fields are still dominated by males. Sound off! Taking a photograph can feel formal, leading to stiff smiles and rigid postures. The truth is the more relaxed you are in front of the camera, the better you’ll appear in the photo! As your photographer, I’ll guide you through every step, making sure you feel comfortable and confident.

Unpopular opinion BUT taking portraits takes more skill than just taking snapshots of people!

I’ve recently been teaching photography to a group of teenagers. We’ve been working on a lot of technical skills and learning how to use manual mode on the camera, and yesterday we finally went out for some portrait photos.

Portrait photography is more than pointing a camera at a smiling model and pressing the shutter button. Here’s some of the many things your portrait photographer is thinking about:

1. Composition! Where am I placing the model in the shot? How does the environment frame and interact with the model?

2. Posing! How do pose the model to highlight their attributes (and it’s not all physical! Does a pose make the model appear more powerful? More soft? More confident?) while contributing to the overall composition?

3. Lighting! Not just how much light is in the scene, but how the light falls on the model to give shape and emotion, especially on the face. If your photographer tells you to move your chin 8 micrometers to the left, chances are they’re watching the small speck of light move across your cheek until it’s right where they want it.

3. Camera settings! As much as I personally don’t like the trend of blurry couples as they run across fields, the photographers who take those photos know how to adjust the shutter speed to get exactly what they want! And getting that delicious bokeh is all in the aperture (…and focal length and subject-to-camera distance and sensor size)!

4. Good vibes! Bringing a good energy to the shoot and making the model feel comfortable creates for more genuine and beautiful images!
