Signal Awards - Signal Awards The Signal Awards is mission-focused on uplifting the podcast medium by recognizing the most potent, meaningful and unprecedented audio projects being made today.

California’s iconic coast redwoods are used to growing in cool, coastal areas where the average temperature is around 59° Fahrenheit. But as average yearly temperatures rise and heatwaves push to 100°-plus spikes, the trees are responding by slowing the very operation that nourishes them, according to a study from the UC Davis.

When under heat stress, the world’s tallest trees slow photosynthesis, the chemical reaction that turns sunlight, water and carbon dioxide from the air into carbon the trees use to grow and perform other essential processes. It’s as if the trees slow their “breathing” and, as a result, their “eating.” The findings raise alarm about the fate of the redwood forests, especially in their already vulnerable central, southern and eastern habitats in the state.

UC Davis retained its spot as the No. 10 public university in the nation in rankings published this week by Times Higher Education.

Four UC campuses made the Times Higher Education top 10, and UC Davis was ranked 65th overall in the world among all 2,297 institutions that were considered.

Peter Wainwright, distinguished professor emeritus of evolution and ecology, is this month's Among the Academies feature as he has dedicated his career to understanding how fish feed and how fish feeding methods evolved. He was elected to the California Academy of Sciences in 2010 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015.

UC Davis has retained its spot as the most sustainable university in North America and seventh in the world, according to the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University rankings announced by the University of Indonesia.

The rankings have named UC Davis “greenest” in North America for 11 years in a row and among the world’s top 10 for 14 consecutive years.

College of Letters and Science Dean Atekwana Reappointed Estella Atekwana has been reappointed to a second five-year term as dean of the College of Letters and Science following the completion of a comprehensive performance review. The committee charged with conducting the review offered its unanimous and enthusiastic endorsement of her reappointment.
