It's wildfire season, and the Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District is giving away FREE home air purifiers through its 2026 Fresh Air For All Program.

Selected households will receive an Oransi AirMend150 HB HEPA air purifier plus a replacement filter, providing up to 24 months of cleaner indoor air.

1. Apply online by July 31
2. One application per household
3. About 780 air purifiers will be awarded through a random lottery.

Wildfire smoke can impact everyone, especially children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions. A HEPA air purifier can help create a cleaner indoor space when air quality declines.

A Taste of Whimsy: Chickens of the 5th Street Community Garden and Friends

Lorie Topinka embraces whimsy - something playfully quaint, fanciful, imaginative, and delightful - in much of her art and occasionally in her writing. This exhibit showcases that aesthetic in her recent book, “Chickens of the 5th Street Community Garden and the Rat Wars”; a whimsical work of creative nonfiction that she describes as a children’s book for adults. Her pieces, inspired by Mexican folk art, feature watercolors of her chickens, their friends, and their adventures in the garden.

About The Book
Gardening is planning plus hard work and luck…and then more hard work. In this fable three chickens transform an abandoned plot into a garden after Lorie injures her knee. They banter and bicker their way through the planning, planting, and weeding of this small community garden plot. Then disaster strikes when the summer of 2024 becomes the time of the rat wars. Will the rats eat everything? Will the garden survive this onslaught? Are there lessons to be learned from the struggles with the rats?

Artist’s Statement
As a watercolor artist, I am drawn to bold colors and iconic images. Whenever I am painting I get lost in the looking and seeing. There is no time, distance, or separation between me and the object or scene. This creative process is joyful and I try to embrace that joy in my pieces.

A new chapter begins this fall in South Davis. 📚

The Yolo County Library's new Walnut Park Library is set to open on Saturday, Nov. 7, bringing a brand-new 12,000+ square-foot community space to Davis.

Located at 2660 Lillard Drive, the $21.3 million library will feature study rooms, children's, teen, and adult collections, computers and Wi-Fi, a large community room, outdoor programming spaces, a Community Resiliency Center, and more.

The grand opening celebration kicks off at 9a with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, family-friendly activities, entertainment, and the chance to explore the library's new spaces.
