This map kind of makes me feel a little crazy that we even have that inspection anymore 🤔

In the 1950s, oil change intervals were much shorter than what we're used to today.

Typical recommendations were:

1,000–2,000 miles for many vehicles in the early 1950s.
By the late 1950s, some manufacturers began recommending 2,000–3,000 miles under normal driving conditions.
Severe service (dusty roads, stop-and-go driving, towing, extreme temperatures) often called for changes as frequently as 1,000 miles.

There were several reasons for the short intervals:

Motor oils lacked the advanced additive packages used today.
Engines had looser manufacturing tolerances and more blow-by.
Many roads were still unpaved, increasing dust contamination.
Oil filtration systems were less effective; some older vehicles used bypass filters instead of full-flow filters.

For comparison:

A typical 1955 car might recommend every 2,000 miles.
A typical modern vehicle often recommends 5,000–10,000 miles, with some synthetic-oil applications exceeding that.

Interestingly, the famous "every 3,000 miles" oil change rule became popular in the 1960s and 1970s and stuck around long after oils and engines improved.
