Did you ever wonder how mining companies know where to look for diamonds?

Kimberlite pipes are a pretty good place to look. And how do you know where to look for kimberlite pipes ? The mineral olivine aka peridot and garnets lead the way to the pipes.

These 3 pietra dura mosaic works of art were created by a famous Florentine family going back hundreds of years to the Medici family. They depict natural mineral specimens and are known as painting in stone.

What a beautiful way of using hard stone materials such as lapis lazuli, agate and jasper to "paint" mosaics.

Thanks to the Granada Gallery for showcasing these beauties.
