Can a Texas insurance company refuse to cover your home just because the roof is old?

The Texas Department of Insurance says no. Insurers can't decline or nonrenew a homeowners policy based on roof age alone. They can still look at the roof's actual condition.

But there's a catch many homeowners miss: an older roof may be covered at actual cash value, which can mean a much smaller check after a storm.
