Yes, I put a full kitchen in my basement. Here's why it wasn't excessive.
This basement opens straight onto our pool. Without it, every drink, every snack, every wet towel run goes up the stairs and through the main kitchen all summer.
So it's a real kitchen. Full-size fridge, sink, counter space that actually works. We use it more than the one upstairs from June through September.
This is what I mean when I say design for how you actually live. The answer isn't always a wet bar.

The paint colors I actually reach for in fall, and where they belong.
Warm whites for anywhere that gets real light. In October, the light goes gold and a cool white will turn gray on you by 4pm.
A deep, muddy green for a small room you want to feel smaller on purpose. Powder rooms, offices, anywhere cozy beats bright.
Warm greige for open main floors, because it holds up when the light changes three times a day.
Something almost-black for an accent moment. A door, a built-in, a single wall.
Rich chocolate brown for spaces that need a little depth and warmth. Think cabinetry, a library, a bedroom, or anywhere you want to create that cozy, layered feeling.
The thing nobody tells you: test it in October light, not June light. The same color is a different color in four months.
Save this before you pick.

Five things that make a bunk room work, and none of them are the beds:
1. A light at every bunk. Nobody shares a lamp, nobody climbs down to turn one off.
2. A mirror at each end of every bunk. Paired with a nightstand for a small detail that makes a big difference.
3. Real stairs instead of a ladder if you have the footprint. Kids use stairs. They avoid ladders.
4. Bedding you can wash 100 times. Not the bedding that photographs best.
5. Wallpaper or paint on the ceiling. It’s what stops it from reading like a bunkhouse.

Three kitchens, three different takes on the stove hood. 👏
From keeping things clean and minimal with no hood to making the hood a statement piece, small design choices can completely change the feel of a kitchen. And don’t forget about the windows and views behind them - they can make a big difference, too!
