I could not agree more!!

I’ve heard two sayings for years, and the longer I work with horses, the more I realize how true they are.

The first is this: the people you surround yourself with are an extension of your energy, so choose wisely.

The second is this: your actions reveal your character.

Both of those show up in horsemanship every single day.

Whether we admit it or not, the environment we put ourselves in shapes how we think and how we make decisions. If you surround yourself with frustrated riders, excuses start to sound reasonable. If you surround yourself with complainers, blame becomes normal. If you surround yourself with shortcuts, patience starts to feel optional.

That energy doesn’t stay outside the arena. It shows up in how you ride.

On the flip side, when you surround yourself with people who value learning, accountability, and honesty, your horsemanship changes. You start asking better questions. You slow down when things don’t make sense. You look for understanding instead of someone to blame.

Then there’s the second part—actions.

It’s easy to say you care about your horse. It’s easy to say you value softness, patience, and trust. But horses don’t respond to what we say. They respond to what we do.

Your character shows up in the moments that don’t go as planned. It shows up in whether you think or react, whether you slow down or escalate, whether you learn or justify.

Anyone can look like a good horseman when everything is going right. Character is revealed when it isn’t.

Success or failure in horsemanship rarely comes down to one big decision. It’s built quietly, ride by ride, through the people you listen to and the choices you make—especially when things get uncomfortable.

If you don’t like where your horsemanship is heading, don’t just look for a new exercise. Take an honest look at who you’re surrounding yourself with and what your actions are really saying.

Horses have a way of telling the truth about us—whether we’re ready to hear it or not.
