Newton County offering housing, utility assistance for COVID-harmed households 12/22/2022

A new source financial assistance for past-due housing and utility bills is now available for Newton County residents! 💲💲💲

Renters, homeowners with mortgages, and landlords who have lost income due to the COVID pandemic can all apply for housing help.

All residents who pay utilities can apply for utility assistance.

There is an income limit and you will need to provide supporting documents with your application. Click the Covington News link below for specifics.

• Newton County Senior Center, 6183 Turner Lake Road, Covington; Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Newton County Judicial Center Law Library, 1132 Usher St., Covington; Monday through Thursday, 8-10 a.m., 3-5 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The funding is provided through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)

Newton County offering housing, utility assistance for COVID-harmed households The county government is now offering a program that can provide rental, mortgage and utility assistance for eligible households harmed by COVID-19 within Newton County.

Newton County is opening Wolverine Gym at R.L. Cousins School for use as an emergency warming shelter beginning today, Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 5 p.m.

The temporary shelter, located at 8134 Geiger Street Covington, Ga, will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. as cold temperatures persist. The Rainbow Center/Garden of Gethsemane, the host agency for the shelter, is providing transportation from the warming shelter to the Rainbow Shelter from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Newton County Board of Commissioners and the City of Covington are partnering to open the Cousins School Warming Shelter as temperatures are expected to be 20-35 degrees below normal by Friday, Dec. 23, with wind chill values as low as 4 degrees Thursday evening/Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Unhoused people in need of emergency shelter can be picked up at the following locations each evening:
1) Rainbow Shelter (7154 Turner Lake Cir SW, Covington, GA 30014)
2) the old K-Mart (now Roses) parking lot (6239 Turner Lake Rd, Covington, GA 30014)
3) Repairers of the Breach Thrift Center on Washington Street (5120 Old Brown Bridge Rd SW, Covington, GA 30014)

Per the news release, security will be provided and people will not be asked to vacate the shelter if the temperature is still in the low 30s in the morning
