From Chokepoints to Shockwaves: Rethinking Food Supply Chain Resilience in a Fragmented World 05/06/2026

How resilient are today’s global food systems—really? What happens when geopolitical tensions, energy markets, and fertilizer supply collide? And are we still optimizing for efficiency…when resilience is what we need most?

This timely article explores how global disruptions are reshaping agri-food supply chains—and why leaders must rethink how the system is built for the future.

From Chokepoints to Shockwaves: Rethinking Food Supply Chain Resilience in a Fragmented World by Dr. Sylvain Charlebois; Senior Director, Agri-Food Analytics Lab Dalhousie University (Canada), and IFAMA Board Member For decades, the global food system was engineered for efficiency.

A question worth asking: What does visionary leadership look like in agriculture?

The Enterprise World (TEW) just answered it. They named IFAMA President Aidan Connolly one of 2025's Most Visionary Leaders for his remarkable ability to bridge innovation with agri-tech.

Not because he predicts the future. Because he understands that agriculture isn't about producing more—it's about producing better. That farmers need backing, not hype. That technology only matters if it serves people, not the other way around.

Three decades of experience. Over 100 countries. One clear philosophy: curiosity and humility beat certainty every time.

Over IFAMA's 35-year history, serving over 20,000 members across 80 countries, we have had many visionary leaders, so it is interesting to see why TEW chose our President for 2025 and what they said matters about being visionary from their interview with Aidan.

That's the essence of IFAMA, our Young IFAMA and our academic journal, the IFAMR.

Educators, researchers, and industry experts! Submit your agribusiness cases for the Teaching Case Conference at IFAMA 2026 in Cork, Ireland.

Teaching cases are powerful tools for bringing real-world decision-making into the classroom—especially in agribusiness, where complexity, trade-offs, and systems thinking are everyday realities. A well-crafted case challenges students (and practitioners) to step into the shoes of a manager, wrestle with imperfect information, make strategic choices, and defend their reasoning.
