Sleeping 8-10 Hours and Still Exhausted? It Might Be Sleep Apnea đŸ˜³

Most people think more sleep fixes everything. It does not. If you have sleep apnea you can sleep ten hours and wake up more exhausted than someone who slept six. Why? Because sleep apnea is diagnosed when you stop breathing as few as five times per hour while you sleep - five times. That is all it takes. And most people who have sleep apnea, have no idea.

Dr. Suzanne Thai is a board-certified Sleep Dentist and Diplomate who treats obstructive sleep apnea exclusively. Watch the full episode on our channel to learn everything about sleep apnea, what it does to your brain, your heart, your relationships, and what you can do about it today.

Are Sleep Apnea Oral Appliances Covered by Insurance?

Are sleep apnea oral appliances covered by insurance? The answer may surprise you. Many people are not sure if oral appliances used to treat obstructive sleep apnea are covered by insurance. In reality, oral appliances are often covered through medical insurance, not dental insurance. Coverage varies based on your individual plan, deductible, co-insurance, and benefits, but many patients are surprised to learn they may pay little to nothing out of pocket for treatment.

In this video, Dr. Suzanne Thai explains how insurance coverage works for sleep apnea oral appliances and why it’s worth checking your benefits before assuming treatment is unaffordable. If you have sleep apnea and cannot tolerate CPAP therapy, oral appliance therapy may be an effective treatment option worth exploring.

You Lost Weight? Your Sleep Apnea May Still NOT Be Gone. Get a New Sleep Study.

Have you lost a significant amount of weight and feel better than ever? That’s fantastic, but does it mean your sleep apnea is gone? Many people assume that losing weight, whether through diet, exercise, or medications like Zepbound, Mounjaro, Wegovy, or Ozempic, automatically cures sleep apnea. In this video, Dr. Suzanne Thai explains why that may not be true. While weight loss can dramatically improve symptoms such as fatigue, low energy, and poor sleep, some patients may still have moderate or even severe sleep apnea without realizing it.

The only way to know if your sleep apnea has resolved is through a follow-up sleep study. Feeling better is encouraging, but proper testing can help protect your long-term health and ensure you’re getting the treatment you need.

Can You Test For Sleep Apnea at Home?.. Yes You Can!

Many people avoid getting tested for sleep apnea because they think they have to spend the night in a sleep lab. The good news is that modern home sleep tests are highly accurate and allow you to be tested in the comfort of your own home, in your own bed, and in your normal sleep environment.

Home sleep testing can help determine how many times you stop breathing during the night and can be an important step toward diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea. If you snore, wake up tired, experience daytime fatigue, or suspect you may have sleep apnea, a home sleep test may be a convenient and effective option.

Grinding Your Teeth at Night? It Could Be Sleep Apnea

Have you been told that you grind or clench your teeth while sleeping? Many people assume it’s just a dental issue, but it could be a warning sign of obstructive sleep apnea. When breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, the body enters a stress response and triggers arousals to help restore airflow. One common sign of these sleep disruptions can be teeth grinding and clenching. Getting evaluated and treated can improve sleep quality, boost energy levels, and support your overall health and well-being.

Can a Dirty CPAP Machine Make You Sick?

Your CPAP machine helps you breathe better while you sleep, but keeping it clean is just as important as using it. Over time, bacteria and other contaminants can build up inside CPAP tubing, masks, and other components if they are not cleaned regularly. Poor CPAP hygiene may increase the risk of respiratory infections and other health concerns.

In this video, Dr. Suzanne Thai explains why cleaning your CPAP machine should be part of your regular sleep apnea treatment routine. A clean CPAP can help support better therapy, healthier breathing, and greater peace of mind.

Do you clean your CPAP as often as recommended? Let us know in the comments below, and follow for more sleep apnea, CPAP, and sleep health tips from Dr. Suzanne Thai.

Think Getting a Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance is the End of Treatment? Think Again.

Many people think getting a custom-made sleep apnea oral appliance means the treatment is complete. The truth is that effective sleep apnea treatment is a process. As your airway begins receiving more oxygen, inflammation and swelling can improve, causing changes in your airway over time. That’s why oral appliance therapy often requires adjustments, monitoring, and follow-up sleep studies. The goal is to find the ideal position that keeps your airway open while maximizing comfort and effectiveness. Moving too little may not adequately treat sleep apnea, while moving too far can create other issues.

In this video, Dr. Suzanne Thai explains why ongoing care, titration, and monitoring are essential parts of successful sleep apnea treatment and long-term airway health.

Can You Get a Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance Before Dental Work?

Many people diagnosed with sleep apnea wonder if they need to wait until crowns, implants, bridges, or other dental treatment is completed before getting an oral appliance. In many cases, the answer is no. A qualified dental sleep medicine specialist can often select an appliance that can be adjusted as your dental treatment changes. Certain appliances use a thermoplastic liner that helps maintain a custom fit, allowing treatment to continue even when dental work is planned.

If you have questions about oral appliance therapy, sleep-disordered breathing, snoring, CPAP alternatives, or dental treatment considerations or you are in need of sleep apnea treatment, contact Dr. Suzanne Thai at:

Quality of Sleep vs Quantity of Sleep

Many people believe sleeping longer automatically means better rest, but that’s not always true. In this video, sleep apnea expert Dr. Suzanne Thai explains why sleep quality is often more important than the number of hours you sleep.

Someone sleeping 10 hours with untreated sleep apnea may feel more tired, less focused, and have lower energy than someone sleeping just 6 hours without sleep apnea. Over time, untreated sleep apnea is also associated with serious health conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Sleeping for long periods and still waking up exhausted could be a sign of sleep apnea.
