Did you know that Native Americans serve in the U.S. Armed Forces at a higher rate per capita than any other ethnic group? For generations, our citizens have stepped up to defend this land, carrying on a long and proud lineage of Cherokee warrior tradition.
Today, as we gather with family, we honor their immense sacrifices, their resilience, and their unwavering dedication to protecting our sovereignty and our future.
To all our Cherokee veterans and active-duty service members: Wado (thank you). We see you, we honor you, and we thank you for your service.

Tonight brings the full moon of Guyegwoni, the Cherokee Ripe Corn Moon.
The corn planted under spring's Anisguti, the Planting Moon, and tasseled under May's Tihaluhiyi, the Green Corn Moon, is now ready. The first roasting ears are being pulled from the stalks. The earliest harvest of the season is here. Some Cherokee elders called this the Sweet Corn Moon.
This moment of the calendar traditionally brought the Green Corn Dance, one of the most important cycle festivals of the Cherokee year. Towns gathered. Dances were performed. Thanks was given to the earth for the abundance returning to the table after months of patient growing.
This is also the season of AniStusti, "Little War," the Cherokee stickball game known today as lacrosse. The summer harvest brought community games, gatherings, and celebrations alongside the spiritual work of the season.
The corn cycle that began in May has come full. From seed to tassel to roasting ear, in three turns of the moon.
