What does it mean to choose peace when violence is all around you?

In the latest episode of Peace Is Power, Janessa Gans Wilder speaks with Rev. Dr. Fuhbang Emmanuel Tanifum, a pastor, theologian, interfaith leader, and grassroots peacebuilder working in Bamenda, Cameroon, amid the country’s ongoing Anglophone conflict.

Emmanuel’s commitment to nonviolence began with a deeply personal experience. As a teenager, he was seriously wounded after responding to a family conflict with violence. The experience forced him to ask what violence could actually accomplish and led him to a conviction that has shaped his life ever since:

“Violence will only beget violence.”

Today, Emmanuel works with young people affected by conflict, combining peacebuilding and leadership education with vocational and self-employment training. His work recognizes a critical reality: young people need not only the skills and confidence to choose peace, but also meaningful opportunities to build dignified livelihoods and futures.

The conversation explores the human cost of Cameroon’s conflict, the power of grassroots peacebuilding, the role of youth and women, the importance of psychosocial healing, and why peacebuilding requires sustained investment rather than short-term interventions.

At the heart of Emmanuel’s message is a powerful belief:
Peace is not simply the absence of violence. Peace is a form of transformative power.
