One of the questions we hear is, “Why don't they just get a job?” It's an understandable question on the surface, but there can be a lot standing between someone and steady employment.

Compassion United is officially a Regional Winner in the Best of Texas Awards! Over the last 20 years, this organization has expanded from simple breakfast tacos in the park to a multi-campus organization with the widest scope of services supporting people experiencing homelessness in Montgomery County.

When you picture someone experiencing homelessness, who do you picture? The answer may be different from what you expect. Homelessness affects people of many ages and backgrounds, and you can't always tell by looking at someone that they're without stable housing.

Did you know Breakfast in the Park has a library? For our friends experiencing homelessness, having something to read can bring comfort and normalcy to a life that can often feel unsafe or unstable. We're so grateful to our librarian for providing books to our friends and to John and Margaret Goldfinch with Conroe Church of Christ for providing Bibles in English and Spanish. Thanks for helping us empower people, one story at a time!

For the past three years, Missions on Wheels has generously loaned us a shower trailer so we can provide this basic but important resource to our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

Now, our new trailer is already in production! We just need $12,000 to get it across the finish line.
A shower means more than getting clean. It means dignity, relief from the Texas heat, and one less barrier to employment and housing.

There can be a lot of assumptions about how someone becomes homeless, but the reality is usually more complicated than people realize. A job loss, medical issue, family crisis, rising housing costs, or several difficult circumstances at once can change someone's housing situation.

Over the next several weeks, we're taking a closer look at homelessness in our community and some of the things people may not see from the outside.
