One of the greatest lessons I learned was the difference between making excuses and providing explanations.

The interesting thing is that explanations often sound perfectly reasonable because, in many cases, they’re true. The challenging economy, staff turnover, competition increases, and more: none of these things are imaginary, and every one of them can impact your business.

The question isn’t whether those circumstances exist. The question is whether they have become your primary focus.

⬇️ I’ve met owners who can spend an hour explaining why business isn’t where it should be and by the end of the conversation they’ve convinced themselves that almost every challenge is outside their control.

⬆️ Then, I’ll visit another shop operating in the very same market, facing the same economy, competing for the same customers and employees, and somehow that owner continues to grow year after year.

💡 What makes the difference? It isn’t luck. It’s perspective.

The most successful shop owners have trained themselves to ask a different question. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” they ask, “What can I do differently because this is happening?”

That subtle shift changes everything by moving the conversation away from blame and toward responsibility.

STX 2026 was a great reminder of something I talked about in my class, The Intentional Growth Advantage:

Growth doesn’t happen by accident. You have to put yourself in places where growth can happen.

I had the opportunity to teach, but some of my best moments came outside the classroom. Spending quality time with Lisa Coyle and Sam Freeman of Promotive, Chris Cloutier of Autoflow, and some fantastic shop owners reminded me how much we can learn when we simply slow down, have a conversation, ask questions, and listen.

That’s one of the things I love about this industry. We may work for different companies, own different shops, and approach problems differently, but there is an incredible amount of knowledge in the room when people are willing to share it.

STX wasn’t just about classes. It was about relationships, conversations, new ideas, and challenging ourselves to keep growing.

And that really is the Intentional Growth Advantage.
