SFBay-area design/build studio: furniture, restorations, and renovations (aka @redneckmodern + @cyanovoxaudio)

Norcalmod is a media portal focused design/build projects, renovation resources, workshop tips and serves as a general how-to resource for the modern DIY movement. Founded as redneckmodern.com, the site grew from the documentation of a single renovation to include custom projects, DIY tips, reviews, and tutorials. Lead by Hunter Wimmer, you can find us with our hands full in the San Francisco Bay Area.

... I’m soooo bad about taking shots — I just want to dive into the fix! ... I need to fix that. ...

The table showed up in the shop split like a pita (biscuit?) laterally at the handle in two places. The veneer was fractured top and bottom. It was pretty mangled.

I told that the veneer in the area could not be salvaged as the table is cemented into one un-assemble-able unit. Since the base and button were also fixed, it could not even be re-veneered. An alt solution needed to be considered... a band of textured enamel to conceal the repair.

All-in-all, not bad for a $1200 table that would have otherwise been binned. What do you think?

Jaimee’s new door // ... we installed it in spring 2019 — not sure how we missed it. The door opens into an interior space (vs. atrium) which is always a challenge. Lots of work on the door jam and threshold helped to ensure that the installation was not only tidy but also weathertight.

... It’s always kind of strange to see the furniture that you have made for clients show up in their Instagram posts. :-)

Stephan’s new front door // it started out quite rough and a terrible shade of green. We repaired the redwood, mortised new hinges and lock cutouts and hung a smooth-face birch door painted an amazing shade.

Jensen’s CSSU // ... A quick one through the workshop before tackling more complex client projects. Jensen needed a simple turntable stand with album storage. This CSSU-LP1(XL) fits the bill with matching walnut-grained panels and pops of orange and blue. At 17in deep, this unit will fit his turntable on top with plenty of room for album storage below.

if you need something for your own , let me know.
