How Does a D3 Billion National Project Simply Disappear?
A proposed US$48 million forensic laboratory project once hailed as a game-changing investment for The Gambia's security and justice system is back in the spotlight after Interior Minister Abdoulie Sanyang told lawmakers there is no trace of the project within government records.
The laboratory, signed in 2017 by former Interior Minister Mai Ahmad Fatty, was presented as a state-of-the-art DNA and forensic science centre that would have been one of the largest security-sector projects in the country's history.
Human rights activist and Director of the Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice, Madi Jobarteh, is now urging the National Assembly to summon both men to explain how such a major national project could vanish without a trace.
The mystery leaves uncomfortable questions about accountability, record-keeping, and whether a potentially transformative development opportunity was allowed to die before it ever got off the ground.

Sonko on Diomaye's Expulsion from PASTEF
Senegalese National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko has dismissed speculation that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye could be expelled from the ruling PASTEF party, saying the matter is not currently under consideration.
Speaking to RFI and France 24, Sonko said PASTEF's internal rules are clear and that any decision on a member's future would be made by the party's structures, not by him alone.

Trump said a memorandum of understanding had already been signed and claimed the Strait of Hormuz was partially open, with a full reopening expected by Friday.
The full text of the agreement has not yet been released, while a formal signing ceremony is expected on June 19 in Geneva.

Progress Gambia leader Amadou Jaiteh has accused President Adama Barrow's government of failing to fix The Gambia's electricity crisis despite years of investment and international support, arguing that "billions have gone in while the lights continue to go out."
As blackouts continue to hit homes, businesses, schools and health facilities across the country, Jaiteh says ordinary Gambians are paying the price through lost income, disrupted studies and growing hardship, warning that the country's dependence on imported electricity has left the power sector dangerously vulnerable.

North Korea to World: "Don't Even Ask"
North Korea has declared its nuclear programme "absolutely non-negotiable" ahead of a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, delivering one of its clearest messages yet that it has no intention of giving up its nuclear arsenal.
The blunt statement underscores a simple reality: Pyongyang remains firmly committed to retaining the weapons it sees as essential to its survival and influence on the world stage.
