The Cultural Approach transforms history from boring, rote memorization into an active and exciting exploration. It does this by applying anthropological methods to the study of history. Students study history by analyzing the six dimensions of culture (Politics, Religion, Aesthetics, Intellectual Developments, Economics, and Social Relations) in a given place and time. They ask questions like “Wh

The Cultural Approach is taking over Harper’s Ferry, WV. John Brown’s fort and a discussion of Lee’s role in the Civil War, John Brown as a hero or villain? What about Frederick Douglass and Harriett Tubman. Civil War to Civil Rights, day one.
Tonight a group of Chattahoochee Valley educators will depart for a field seminar beginning in Harper's Ferry, WV, to Gettysburg, PA, and culminating in Washington DC. The overall theme will be evaluating six Americans who made history in the development of civil rights for African Americans.
The objective of the experience is to understand the historical method of "perspective taking," to understand how the categories of culture influence motives, and to have goosebump moments as we stand in the footsteps of these important Americans.
