BLUE LAMPS IN THE MARANTZ
I recently posted a photo of a beautiful Marantz 2270 with blue LED lamps. Apparently, I touched a nerve.
The post generated quite a few comments from people who absolutely do not like blue lamps in their Marantz. One person even claimed—without offering any evidence—that 80% of my clientele would be “alienated” by them.
Here’s the thing:
I like the blue lamps.
I think they look fantastic, and I think they’re a great alternative to the odd teal color you often get from 50-year-old vellum combined with white incandescent lamps.
But here’s the real kicker. If you don’t like blue lamps, you have several options:
Don’t buy the unit.
Buy one with the original-style lighting.
And here’s my personal favorite: ASK US TO INSTALL WHITE LAMPS!
We’ll happily change them to white for free upon request.
Man, that was easy.
I originally came from the antique radio restoration world, and restoration guys have debated this stuff forever. Some people would hollow out old paper capacitors and hide modern film caps inside just to preserve the original appearance. Others insisted on original-style cloth wire and even cloth-covered power cords.
There has always been a spectrum between absolute originality and tasteful modernization.
The fact remains that Stereo Lab has been selling Marantz receivers with blue LEDs for a long time, and for many of our customers, the blue lighting is a selling point.
If you prefer the original look, great. If you prefer white LEDs, great. If you love the blue, so do I.
That’s one of the nice things about owning vintage audio: it’s yours. Enjoy it the way YOU want it.

Introducing the Marantz Gold Plate Service
Your vintage Marantz 22xx or 23xx series receiver is a masterpiece of classic audio engineering—beautifully built, great sounding, and designed in an era when quality mattered.
Many of these legendary receivers are now approaching or exceeding 50 years old. While they were built to last, age eventually takes its toll on capacitors, relays, lamps, switches, connections, solder joints and other components.
At Stereo Lab, we’ve combined many of the most important maintenance and restoration procedures into one comprehensive package:
The Marantz Gold Plate Service
In most cases, the Gold Plate Service will restore your Marantz to reliable, great-sounding operation while preserving as much of the original receiver as practical. If we discover problems beyond the scope of the package, we’ll discuss them with you before performing additional work.
Gold Plate Service Includes:
Clean all controls and switches, including the pre-main loop.
Treat connections with CAIG DeoxIT as appropriate.
Replace lamps with LEDs in your choice of blue or white, including indicator lamps as needed.
Install a new LED stereo beacon.
Clean and lubricate the tuning capacitor.
Replace the speaker protection relay.
Replace power-supply capacitors included within the service package.
Test critical capacitors and replace as needed within the scope of the service.
Center the FM discriminator.
Peak FM IF coils.
Clean and polish the faceplate.
Clean and DeoxIT rear RCA connections and speaker terminals.
Clean and dress rear-panel connections.
Test all inputs, including the phono section.
Inspect for more serious problems that may require additional repair.
Inspect for broken or cold solder joints and reflow as needed.
Calibrate DC offset and bias to factory specification where applicable.
Replace missing feet with new 3-D printed feet as needed.
Replace a frayed, damaged or cut power cord with an equivalent cord as needed.
180-day warranty on Gold Plate service work performed by Stereo Lab.
Priority Service — your Gold Plate receiver goes next on the bench rather than entering our normal 8–10 week service backlog.
$599 + Tax
Important Gold Plate Service Terms
The Marantz Gold Plate Service is available only for qualifying Marantz 22xx and 23xx series receivers. Quadraphonic models and models outside these series are not eligible.
Problems discovered outside the services described above are not included in the $599 package price. If additional repairs are necessary, they will be estimated separately and discussed with you before additional work is performed.
“Next on the bench” means that once the technician completes the unit currently being serviced, your Gold Plate receiver is next in line. It does not mean immediate or same-day completion.

Today, Stereo Lab remembers Frank Beard, the accomplished drummer for ZZ-Top. Losing Dusty Hill a few years ago was tough, now we have lost Frank Beard, an iconic American band has lost its heart and soul.
