What does it mean to be an immigrant in the US?

Imali J. Abala, originally from Kenya, came to the United States as an immigrant in 1983 to attend Wilmington College. Following her graduation, she enrolled in graduate school at Ohio State University from 1987 – 1992 where she earned MAs in Black Studies and English and a PhD in English. Imali has been a professor at Ohio Dominican University since 1992.

Dr. Abala is a novelist, poet, memoirist, short story writer, and children's book author. Much of her work amplifies women's voices, challenges patriarchal norms, and reflects on her experiences in the United States. A passionate postcolonial feminist, she explores themes of identity, resilience, and justice through her acclaimed novels and lyrical poetry. Her writing is bold, evocative, and deeply committed to empowering women.

Imali will be sharing her experiences as an immigrant, in part through the story of the main character in her semi-autobiographical memoir, Fragmented Lives. The character, Mary Upanga, left Kenya for the United States in search of opportunity, but met unexpected challenges from discrimination and poverty to the constant fear of deportation. Navigating life on society’s margins, Mary Upanga embodies the struggles and hopes of countless African immigrants.

The Call To Action Columbus meeting scheduled for Wednesday September 16 at 5:30pm has been postponed until Wednesday October 21 at 7pm.

The deadline to register for the Call To Action Conference starting November 6 is October 1. For those of you who cannot go to Baltimore for the conference; for those of you who would like to participate, but the cost is too much, you can participate in the conference electronically for a greatly reduced price. St Mary Magdala Mass Celebration

Rev Shanon Sterringer, an ordained Roman Catholic female priest, will be presiding at a St. Mary Magdala Mass celebration in honor of the first apostle, Mary Magdala, the apostle to the apostles. Mary was also Jesus' very first disciple. Shanon is the pastor of a church here in Ohio.

When God calls women to be priests, no one should tell God, “No, women aren’t allowed to be priests.”

One way to honor God's call to women to be priests, deacons and bishops is to participate in Mass with a female priests. Come experience what Mass could be like once we allow women to answer God's call.

If other Catholics, who also want women priests, show up at this event, should there be, or could there be, some sort of discussion about how we might work together to actively advocate for women’s equality?
