What you see in the finished piece is the fabric, the form, the color. What you do not see is everything that made it possible.
The wood frame built to hold its shape under years of pressure. The corner blocking and joinery done before a single layer of foam goes on. The sanding pass that makes sure every edge is clean before upholstery begins. The clamps holding glued joints tight while the pieces cure.
None of it shows up in the final photo. All of it determines how the piece performs.
That attention to detail at every stage is what separates furniture that holds up for years from furniture that does not.

Every fabric choice is a decision.
How it feels, how it wears, how it holds up in a high-traffic environment. How it cuts, how it aligns, and how it performs after years of real use. It starts with the right material on the roll and carries through every step in the shop.
The thread, the fabric, the hands that work with it. All of it matters before a single piece leaves our floor.
Thoughtful material selection is what separates furniture that looks good at install from furniture that holds up for years to come.

Meet the newest addition to the Fortner team. Kristen Hart, Commercial Furniture and Design Consultant.
Kristen's background spans luxury hospitality, real estate leadership, and interior architecture and design. She came to Fortner to work closer to the craft and to become a trusted resource for designers and clients navigating complex commercial interiors projects.
Outside of work, Kristen and her daughter sew together. They take old fabric and turn it into new stuffed animals, pillowcases, and more.
Welcome, Kristen. If you see her out and about, make sure to give her a warm welcome.

Good furniture does not have an expiration date.
It is built for the space it lives in. Solid materials, tight construction, and an understanding of what high-traffic environments actually demand. It does not wear out on a schedule. It holds up, performs, and gets better with time.
Stop replacing. Start buying right.

Caught in the wild.
Over the past few years we have been building custom lounge seating for an international retailer. Dozens of pieces, designed to spec, produced at scale, and shipped across the country and overseas. These are two of them.
A vertical channel sofa in a warm brown performance fabric and a pair of rounded lounge chairs in tan. Both built to hold up in a high-traffic retail environment and look good doing it.
Custom at-scale furniture should feel as considered as a one-off piece. That is what we build.

Rounded arms, full seat, clean seams throughout.
This lounge chair is upholstered in a warm tan performance fabric and built to hold its shape through years of real use. Simple in design. Deliberate in construction.
Lounge seating should feel as good as it looks and be built to handle years of real use.

Behind every custom piece is a lot of work that never gets seen.
This is bent lamination. Thin sheets of wood are glued, layered, and pressed around a form. The layers bond together under pressure and hold the shape once the glue cures. From there it gets sanded by hand until the profile is smooth and consistent all the way through.
That attention to detail at every step is what makes the difference between furniture that lasts a season and furniture that lasts for years.

Two fabrics. One corner banquette.
The seat cushion is upholstered in a bold botanical print. The body wraps in deep green vinyl, durable enough for a high-traffic amenity space and rich enough to anchor the whole room. That contrast was intentional. So was every stitch.
Built for Crimson Design Group. Multifamily seating should feel as good as it looks and be built to handle years of real use.

Small piece, big impact.
The chevron pattern on this ottoman is not just a fabric choice. It has to be cut and positioned so the pattern flows continuously from the top across the sides without breaking. That takes careful work in the shop before a single staple is set.
Add the red piping as a transition between the patterned top and the solid black base and you get something that quietly pulls the whole room together.
Pieces like this have to look good and hold up to daily use. That part matters just as much.
