We moved a client to memory care last week. She didn’t want to move, and didn’t understand why she needed to. It was a hard day for her family, who just wanted her to be happy. Making decisions for our loved ones that they may not be able to make for themselves or understand is a weighty responsibility.

When the decision to move is made, there are some things that help loved ones feel more secure. Even though it may be tempting to purchase new furniture, bedding, pillows and clothing…. our training and experience tell us that keeping those things unchanged can be a comfort for your family member. It’s tempting to look at old, flat pillows or stained sheets and want to replace them. But that pillow, with the soft worn pillowcase has often been the same place they have laid their head for many years, and it can give them the feeling of safety and recognition when everything else seems new and confusing. It also gives some control back to the client by keeping the choices that they have already made in the past.

The client we moved last week is loved and cared for, and she needed to move to a more secure and supportive setting to keep her safe. We kept as much the same as possible, and moved everything while she was out for the day so that the room felt familiar when she came back in the afternoon. We made sure that her pictures and the items she uses regularly are where she can easily see them. We narrowed down her clothing choices to those that she wears regularly. We made sure that her door had the same wreath on it so she can recognize her new room.

Memory care moves are seldom easy for families. We are happy to be able to help in a small way, even if it’s just acknowledging that it is a difficult transition, and helping to get the new room settled.
