A young boy from Nebraska with congenital heart disease has been adopted by his doctor after having to face heart surgery alone. He was born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome, or HRHS, meaning the right side of his heart is underdeveloped. “He was sitting there all alone. It took me back that this 4 year old was going to go through heart surgery, and no one was there.” 🙏🙏🙏🙏

A family with deep ties to Dearborn is asking the community to come together for prayers and support as their teenage son faces a life-threatening medical crisis.
Mohamed Hammoud, whose extended family lives throughout Dearborn and metro Detroit, is currently in urgent need of a lung transplant to survive. He is being treated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio, where doctors have determined a transplant is necessary to save his life.
According to his family, Mohamed has blood type B positive, and compatible donors include those with B positive or negative, as well as O positive or negative blood types. The family says a direct hospital-to-hospital transplant is required.
Mohamed’s medical journey began at just three years old, when he was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, a rare childhood cancer. He underwent extensive treatment, including the removal of one kidney and part of his upper left lung after the cancer spread. By the family’s account, he has been cancer-free for 11 years.
However, doctors say long-term effects from his cancer treatment later led to nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP), a rare form of interstitial lung disease that causes inflammation and scarring in the lungs. The condition has made it increasingly difficult for Mohamed to breathe and live a normal teenage life.
While Mohamed is receiving care out of state, his family says their roots in Dearborn have prompted them to reach out locally for help spreading the word.
The family is asking anyone who may be able to help — or anyone willing to share Mohamed’s story — to do so, saying awareness could make a life-saving difference.
Those seeking more information can contact the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Lung Transplant Office at (513) 803-7009. The family can also be reached directly at (248) 761-2621.
