Remote HVAC Monitoring Case Study | Havtech 10/02/2026

"The first rule in any organization is no surprises."

That's what prompted a 118,000-sq-ft DC cooperative to add remote monitoring to its HVAC maintenance plan. Good thing they did.

Cool Automation flagged an abnormal compressor condition between scheduled visits, no resident complaints, no comfort issues, nothing obvious onsite. Havtech investigated, found the real issue, and fixed it before it became a $10K-$20K compressor replacement.

See how connected service caught the problem early 👇

Once the rack layout is finalized, some data center cooling decisions become much harder to change.

Before that happens, project teams should be asking:

What rack densities are we designing for now and later?
What happens if a cooling component or power feed is lost?
Where will chilled water, power and controls need to go?
Is there enough room for service and maintenance?
What should be planned now if liquid cooling is added later?

High-density cooling isn’t just an equipment-selection decision. It can affect the layout and supporting infrastructure around the rack.

Here’s what to consider as rack densities increase: https://ow.ly/ETxy50ZTb5W

Your data center may be air-cooled today.

That doesn’t mean you should plan only for today.

As rack densities increase, future cooling strategies may require chilled water, additional power and controls, and space for equipment such as a CDU.

The goal isn’t to install everything now.

It’s to avoid finding out later that the infrastructure you need was never planned for.

Our recent article looks at what higher-density GPU racks can change in the cooling design.

Data centers are evolving fast, and heat rejection design has to keep up.

Join us for Trends in Data Center Heat Rejection, presented by Dustin Cohick of Baltimore Aircoil Company. We'll cover rack density evolution, the shift toward liquid cooling, and higher operating temperatures, and how they're reshaping heat rejection design.

Amplifying Data Center Computing Power with Hybrid Adiabatic Cooling 09/04/2026

What if one closed-loop cooling system could support both direct-to-chip and air-side cooling?

Havtech, Shumate Engineering, and BAC tested that approach using the BAC TrilliumSeries® Adiabatic Cooler.

At BAC’s R&D facility, the system was tested across multiple operating conditions to verify it could meet approximately 90°F cooling water requirements for direct-to-chip cooling and 68°F cooling water requirements for air-side cooling.

The design showed:
▪️ Connected PUE of 1.2 or better
▪️ Up to 12% more usable IT power
▪️ Dry cooling operation up to 90% of the year

A different cooling architecture, tested against real operating conditions.

A big thank you to Loren Cook Company for a fantastic factory visit in Springfield, Missouri, and for the world-class hospitality!

Our Pittsburgh team brought Osborn Engineering and the University of Pittsburgh for some hands-on training.

We spent the day with Cook's engineering and manufacturing teams, deepening our understanding of fan selection best practices, system effects, fan performance testing, and real-world operating conditions.

Distance alone may not solve a data center noise problem.

A large data center campus with 72 chillers, each rated at about 96 dB, could produce roughly 115 dB.

At 500 feet, that could drop to about 71 dB if there were nothing around to reflect or redirect the sound.
But real data center campuses don't work that way.

Buildings, reflective surfaces, equipment density, and site layout can all affect the sound level.

Setback distance is only one part of the design.

Before finalizing equipment layout, ask:
Where the sound requirement applies
How acoustical treatment will affect the air path
Whether the structure can support the treatment without limiting service access.

Addressing these questions early gives you more flexibility to balance acoustics, cooling performance, and service access.

See what to review before selecting acoustical treatment: https://ow.ly/6Qrw50ZG9RA
