Fallen Tree Acres

Garlic harvest has begun! This softneck variety was first to be ready, but my other varieties have a few more weeks left. I’m pretty stoked. How’s your garlic doing?

This is probably my second favorite time of the year. Garlic scapes are being harvested, wildflowers are blooming everywhere, blackberries are ripening, milkweed is in bloom, Luna moths grace the tree trunks, elderflowers are in bloom, blueberries are growing, monarchs are visiting, sunflowers are starting to bloom and the flock is happy as can be. It’s such a rich season that falls second only to the abundance of late September. After being in a severe drought, followed by weeks of flooding rains, the weather lately has been absolutely perfect. I try to soak up these days, these moments, as much as I can.

Your mom called. She said she wants farm fresh eggs for Mother’s Day.

It’d be swell if you cook ‘em for her too.

The chicks are 2 weeks old now and cuter than ever. I’m so excited about how many blue/lavender babies I got from this little hatch.

The girls are pumping out eggs like the laying machines they are! I’m still obsessed with all the greens. It’s incredible how many shades there can be. Speckled, heavy bloom, camo, and everything from aqua to sage to deep khaki green. I lined the up with my shades of blue, added in a white for comparison, and set them next to all the shades of brown I currently have. What’s crazy is, this isn’t all the colors. 50+ hens and a full rainbow!
