We’re all used to flipping a switch to turn on a light, plugging in a wall wart to charge our cell phone, or booting up our laptop to surf the net with little if any thought of how electrical power is almost always there to support modern conveniences in our daily lives. Cass Kuhl from NASA Glenn Research Center joined us for our March 2026 Section Meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd to review what occurs on the other side of that outlet in your house, as it makes its way back to the generation source. The audience had no shortage of questions, which led to a very engaging discussion. Thank you, Cass, for presenting to our Section!

On February 17th, Don Brown from NASA Glenn
gave a talk on synchronous condensers and how
they are being used at NASA to correct for lagging
power factors caused by other motors. The talk
gave insight into which motor properties are
critical to make a good synchronous condenser,
how synchronous condensers can be controlled
(either singly or in groups), and the tradeoffs
between synchronous condensers and capacitor
banks.
The meeting was well attended. Don’s talk served
as the ideal the keystone to an enjoyable evening
spent catching up with long time colleagues and
forging new professional contacts.
For those who attended the Cedar Point tour and requested a PDH certificate, due to the volume of certificates, it is taking longer than usual for us to get these generated. We appreciate your patience and anticipate having these available in Inboxes sometime during the week of November 3rd.
For those who have registered for this year's tour, your tickets were distributed this evening. Your digital ticket is tied to the email address provided during registration.
