Helping a loved one move from a bed to a wheelchair, from a chair to standing or between other surfaces can become a regular part of caregiving. Transfers may seem straightforward, but they can also be physically demanding and stressful for both the caregiver and the person receiving assistance.

A safe transfer starts with recognizing that your loved one should be an active participant whenever possible. The right approach will depend on their strength, balance, mobility and ability to follow instructions. If you are unsure what type of assistance your loved one needs, ask a physical or occupational therapist to demonstrate the safest technique for their specific situation. Read more:

After an unexpected move, Celestine found a new home at Margaret Wagner Apartments. While she loved her apartment, she missed the friendships she had left behind. That's when she was introduced to the Senior Companion Program and matched with volunteer Lelia Lett.

Benjamin Rose turned his success in Cleveland’s meatpacking industry into a lasting legacy of service to older adults. When he died, he left his $3 million fortune to charity, establishing the Benjamin Rose Institute.

Rose’s vision was to help needy older adults live with “comfort and dignity.” More than a century later, we’re proud to carry on that vision through our work serving older adults, caregivers and families.
