We were out in the backyard the other day, and we caught a really good example of how Rico demonstrates his persistent alerts as a medical alert service dog. I have a hard time capturing them when it’s just me, especially because if they progress too far, I end up actually in a medical episode, and then documenting/content creation really isn’t high on the priority list.

But here we got five separate alerts, starting out with my partner and I relaxing in the backyard after exercising the dogs. The dogs had been relaxing, but right before the video, Rico gets up, stands, and starts watching me and starts scenting the air for the “Bad Smell.” Medical alert service dogs can smell small chemical shifts in your body. This can help them alert to oncoming medical episodes such as migraine attacks, seizures, and hypoglycemia. Alert 1-2: He will “boop” me on my hip/leg to let me know that something is up. While Rico still gets praise, I will not always immediately take action after the first couple of alerts. I do this because sometimes I feel fine, or I have might have already taken medication, so I think I might be able to evade the episode. (This is often a mistake that I come to regret.) For alert 3 he’s trying to get both me and my partner’s attention, and at this point I’m starting to feel symptoms. Alert 4 was directly aimed at my partner - he and Rico have worked as a team to take care of me during my sickest days since 2020, so they have a very special bond with each other (and I call this phase the “I’m telling on you, mom” phase). Alert 5: A bark alert means Rico is serious, and that my health situation needs to be handled. This includes: taking medication, leaving high sensory areas for quiet spaces, using hot/cold therapy, and going to bed. Lately I’ve been passing out a lot and have been very unsteady on my feet with whatever is going on, so my partner has had to help me get to bed to recover.

I hope this helped some of you learn a little bit more about medical alert dogs and what they can do!

The Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act has been signed into law, strengthening food allergy safety in schools nationwide. Led by Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Deb Fischer, the bipartisan legislation was enacted as an amendment to the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act and requires food allergy safety training for school food service staff.

FARE was proud to support this legislation and extends its gratitude to Senator Dick Durbin for his leadership and longstanding commitment to protecting children with food allergies.

“By ensuring school food service staff receive training on food allergy safety, you’ve helped make schools safer for millions of children nationwide,” said Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE.

The new law amends USDA requirements for the National School Lunch Program, formally making food allergy safety training a mandatory part of annual training for all school food service personnel.

Let’s talk gluten, especially with the holidays here! There is so much talk about parts per million (ppm) in food for what is safe. That’s only part of the picture. The 20 ppm was decided on being the threshold based on keeping those with celiac below 10 mg of gluten a day. They figured based on servings per day of what a person should be eating that 20 ppm per serving was safe. Well let’s be real some items it is very difficult to stick to 1 serving (pizza, sweets, and similar things), also some people are more sensitive and their bodies react to gluten at lower levels. Then also think of those snack foods 2 small cookies are a serving or the pretzel thins, then add a dip (it is is homemade you may have multiple servings you are needing to consider).

This is where gluten detection dogs come into play. We have been able to consistently test the dogs and they have reliably alerted down to 0.01 ppm of gluten. In order to test lower we would need access to a sterile lab. This is why they are an invaluable tool for many with celiac.

Having a chronic condition or disability is hard, but you know what I think is not talked about enough?? How hard it is to be a disabled or chronically ill college girlie!

As someone who has lived that, I really want to find a student with chronic conditions or disabilities and help give them the helping hand I wished I had. Let me tell you figuring it all out by yourself is not easy.

So, together let’s find this girl, decorate her dorm room, and find tools/items that make every day life more accessible to her so she can succeed!

If you know someone that fits this description tag them (or nominate yourself!!) AND tag your favorite brands that you think could help us make this happen! I’ll start: @marshalls @tjmaxx @jcpenny @potterybarn @anthropologiehome @wayfair @naturallife @betterhomesandgardens @cozyearth @urbanoutfitters @kohls @amazon @etsy @feminist

I’m so excited to help make someone’s life a little bit better together, because isn’t that what all of this is actually about?
