We are excited to celebrate the St. Leo the Great Historic District, officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 2026!
Located in Cincinnatiโs North Fairmount neighborhood, St. Leo the Great Parish was founded in 1886 by German Catholic immigrants. The parish constructed its present church in 1905, and for more than 120 years, St. Leo has remained a neighborhood landmark and gathering place.
The historic parish and school complex tells an important Cincinnati story through its architecture and generations of use. It reflects the history of faith, immigration, education, and community in North Fairmount, from the German immigrants who established the parish to the diverse immigrant and refugee communities St. Leo serves today.
The National Register designation comes as another part of the historic complex begins a new chapter. The 1927 St. Leo School is being adapted into 25 affordable senior apartments, preserving an important neighborhood building while giving it a new purpose. Cincinnati Preservation is proud to support this work through our Preservation Loan Fund.
Congratulations to St. Leo the Great Parish and School and everyone who helped make this recognition possible!

๐ Welcome back to Terminology Tuesday, where we define and illustrate the key terms used in historic preservation. ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฌ are small, rectangular blocks used in a repeating pattern along a cornice. Cincinnatiโs Italianate and Greek Revival buildings often feature dentils beneath the eaves or at the pediments. This Greek Revival entryway includes an ornate pediment, and you can find dentils directly below the triangular pediment. Are you not familiar with the term pediment? Today is a day worth celebrating.
This afternoon, Cincinnati City Council voted 8-1 to approve the North Avondale Local Historic District, ensuring that one of Cincinnatiโs architectural treasures will be protected for generations to come.
This victory belongs first and foremost to the North Avondale community. For years, neighbors came together to listen, learn, have difficult conversations, refine the proposal, and build consensus around a shared vision for their neighborhood. They chose to be proactive rather than waiting for a crisis, and in doing so, they created a model for how neighborhoods can thoughtfully shape their own future.
Thank you to Cincinnati City Council for supporting the neighborhoodโs stated goals and honoring the vision already established in the North Avondale Neighborhood Plan.
Congratulations, North Avondale. Thank you to every resident, volunteer, advocate, staff member, and Council Member who helped make today possible.
Together, weโre proving that preserving Cincinnatiโs past is one of the best investments we can make in its future.
