Before applying for Medicare, you can contribute to your HSA. However, you cannot contribute to an HSA when you are enrolled in any part of Medicare.

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B). It's a bundled plan offered by private companies that Medicare approves. Who is eligible for Medicare Part C for seniors? To enroll in Original Medicare (to be eligible for Part C), in general, you must qualify by: Age: You must be at least 65 years old or older. Citizenship: U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident for at least 5 years.

Fast Fact: If you continue to work past 65, you want to stop HSA contributions at least six months before applying for Medicare because your Medicare Part A will become retroactive by six months.
