MPAACT & FATE (Fehinty African Theater Ensemble) come together to explore the varied voices of African immigrants in Chicago.

Three decades in the making, this production is an adaptation of more than 20 personal stories, collected by multiple cultural institutions, looking to document the remarkable vitality of these communities.

Seen through the lens of America’s 250th anniversary, Crossing the Big Water takes an often joyous, sometimes humorous, and always unflinchingly honest look at the myriad ways Africans have built a life for themselves in inside the American experiment.

Casting:
Black Actors, 2 Men / 2 Women, ages 20+
1 male / 1 female understudy
Material to Prepare:
Actors should prepare a 1-2 minute monologue.
Time Commitment:
August through November 2026. Rehearsals will primarily be held on evenings and weekends. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be provided following casting.
*Culturally Specific African Dialects a Plus.

BACKSTAGE: ONE 4 THE ROAD

One 4 the Road was the debut work for the late Leonard House Jr. as a playwright. An accomplished actor, Leonard, wanted to tell the story of a southside neighborhood struggling to hold on to its history. The 2019 production was directed by Runako Jahi and featured veteran actors Donn Carl Harper, Tina Marie Wright, and Darren Jones, who were joined by newcomer Omari Ferrel.

This backstage segment features commentary from the world premiere cast as they explore the play, the era, and the elements of production that brought them together.

ICONS: A CONVERSATION WITH REGINA TAYLOR

Regina Taylor is a multidisciplinary artist and activist. Her plays include Crowns, Oo-Bla-Dee, Drowning Crow, The Trinity River Plays. Her first role to garner widespread attention was in the 1989 film Lean on Me. Her career skyrocketed with her role as Lilly Harper in the TV series I’ll Fly Away. Film credits include Clockers, Courage Under Fire, The Negotiator, and Anita Hill. Sitting down with Carla Stillwell, Ms. Taylor discusses her journey from small town Texas to NYC and then on to Hollywood.

WHEN GOOD BROCCOLI GOES BAD: THE MUSICAL

Utilizing Chicago’s rich musical history, When Good Broccoli Goes Bad explores the life of a young stalk of Broccoli and her adventures exploring the zones and various food choices of the refrigerator.

Song and dance numbers cover Gospel, Blues, R&B, and Hip Hop in a playful manner that is entertaining and informative for audiences of all ages. When Good Broccoli Goes Bad: The Musical focuses on the importance of healthy eating for school-aged children, specifically highlighting the five healthy food groups: vegetables and legumes, fruit, cereals /grain foods, dairy/ dairy alternatives, and meat/meat alternatives.
