Long before reggaeton topped global charts, its story was being written through migration, resistance, and the sounds of the Caribbean.

“Dancing the Revolution: From Dancehall to Reggaetón,” a new exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, centers on what curator Carla Acevedo-Yates describes as a “multilocal phenomenon” of Caribbean culture, anchored in both joy and resistance.

For Acevedo-Yates, research for the exhibition felt closer to ethnographic fieldwork. “This is not material culture, not an artifact. It is contemporary art,” she said. Acevedo-Yates describes the art on display as something defined by multiple disciplines: music, nightlife, migration, and design, but not subordinated to any of them.

By bringing dancehall and reggaeton into the museum space, the exhibition functions as a first-of-its-kind exploration of the genres’ impact on art, identity, and social movements.
