Bipolar disorder (formerly called manic-depressive illness or manic depression) is a mental health condition that causes clear shifts in a person’s mood, energy, activity levels, and concentration.

People with bipolar disorder often experience periods of extremely elated, irritable, or energized behavior (known as manic epidosdes) and very “down”, sad, indifferent, or hopeless periods (known as depressive episodes).

Our thoughts on language:
Language of diagnosis is powerful. For some people the words/definitions are a relief, for some it can be a burden - another way in which they are “othered”.

Diagnosis language, like all language, changes over time. We recognize many words are not all encompassing. They can lack nuance and don’t always describe the specifics of what we feel. So we encourage you to take in what serves you, and leave what doesn’t.

On the day of the photoshoot we ask folx to bring items that make them feel most alive and joyful.

Ana’s full quote - “It was this magical experience of ‘everything is crumbling and I’m still here.’ Right? I didn’t somehow disappear or vanish. Everything I thought I was or was supposed to be went to nothing. I was still present.”

Ana speaking to our souls with this one..sometimes, the narratives we write about ourseleves keep us from seeing who we really are. Magic can happen when we finally sit with truth of ourselves and release our assumptions.

Meet Ana (pronounced like AH-na) one of our OG RFL participants featured in May of 2023.

Ana is a self-described hugger, dancer, mother, immigrant, Black + Trinidadian and she believes that healing is magic.
