Yesterday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced an executive order on environmental justice. It commits the city to a number of actions including completion of the cumulative impact assessment, hiring a permanent position to make the zoning and planning process more accessible to the public, and requiring city departments to develop EJ Action Plans.

This is the direct result of organizing and leadership of EJ orgs and activists across the city including Chicago Environmental Justice Network BIG: Blacks in Green Neighbors For Environmental Justice People for Community Recovery Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO).

We hope that Mayor-elect Johnson uses this as a platform to continue to address the environmental harms experienced disproportionately by Black, Latinx and low-income Chicagoans.
