Apartment Therapy
This is an interior update of an apartment in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago. The building is a lakefront high-rise and was designed by Black Architect John W. Moutoussamy in 1967. It is believed that "for a short period" the building was the Chicago home of Muhammad Ali.
The apartment itself, has an awesome view of Lake Michigan with a strong southern exposure. Evidently, it was a very bland space which is not at all uncommon in the rental market... I started off by adding an accent wall to favor denim; I accomplished this by using a faux Ralph Lauren Blue-jean paint. You can find the technique here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTyWU-q6Buw&t=4s and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPu1fLZVIDs. Most of the furniture is of Mid Century Modern design which I found in various places. The Shell chair which was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1963, is an obvious reproduction; but I felt was a nice touch.
As you can see, these are the befores and afters:

Mid Century Modern Gary
This home is known as “The Rainer” a kit house designed by Jerry Gropp back in the 1960’s. Jerry Gropp (who is still practicing) is an architect from Seattle, Washington who designed several modern home designs for a variety of national shelter magazines such as New Homes Guide, Home Modernizing Guide and Better Homes & Gardens. His skills were recognized by the National Association of Homebuilders who asked him to provide his contemporary designs for a number of their builder publications. For about two decades, Gropp designed over eighty unique “Plan Packages” for home owners to purchase through mail order.
He provided thousands of plans for clients all over the United States and abroad. His most popular design was “The Rainier” NHG #2450, which was designed for sloping narrow lots. It featured contemporary lines with a shallow pitched roof and exposed beam framing, and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in the living and dining areas.
I have seen “The Rainer” on several websites dedicated to Mid Century Modern architecture and have admired this floorplan, not knowing that there were actually a few in the region I grew up in. I had not realized it until I went back home to visit, that there were a few in Gary. I happen to drive past one and recognized it. I ended up circling the block. Lol… I pulled out my phone and looked up the floor plan, then did a comparison, and it was indeed a Rainer.
Gary, Indiana has a nice array of Mid Century Modern architecture that I would love to research, explore and share. Many of these homes and public buildings are examples of the economic prosperity Gary experienced in the 50’s and early 60’s.
