What if improving the patient experience wasn't about doing more... but about connecting better?

In my latest Coffee Break episode, I sat down with Dr. Mary Jo Assi from to discuss the growing challenges facing healthcare teams, from workplace violence and declining trust to caregiver engagement and patient experience.

One of my favorite takeaways: Human connection doesn't take more time, it takes more intention.

A little eye contact. Explaining what you're doing. Making patients feel seen, heard, and safe.

These small moments can have a powerful impact on both patient outcomes and caregiver well-being.

Survey results don’t change culture. What leaders do with them does.

Too often leaders either:
❌ Take the results personally
❌ Stay silent too long
❌ Ask staff for feedback...then never follow up

And when that happens, trust disappears fast.

In this week’s podcast episode, I’m sharing practical ways to turn employee survey data into action that actually improves workplace culture.

We talk about:
✨ Why leaders need to share results early
✨ How to focus on the RIGHT priorities
✨ Why visible follow-up matters
✨ How to involve staff in creating solutions

Because culture change is a team effort...not something leaders should carry alone.

What an incredible day with the team at MedStar Health Washington Hospital Center 💙

So grateful for the opportunity to talk about healthy work cultures, leadership, and the power of how we treat each other. The energy, engagement, and honest conversations were exactly what healthcare needs right now.

This is how we create change...together.

Workplace violence usually doesn’t start with violence.

It starts with the eye roll.
The huff and puff.
The sarcastic comment.
The gossip.
The disrespect that gets ignored because everyone is busy and overwhelmed.

In this week’s Coffee Break episode, I’m talking about why those low-level behaviors matter so much...and how addressing them early can completely change the culture of a team.

Not with punishment.
Not with shame.
But with consistency, clarity, and courage.

Sometimes all it takes is:

“Hey, we don’t do that here.”

In this episode, I share practical strategies to help leaders and teams:
☕ Address incivility early
☕ Set clear behavioral expectations
☕ Empower charge nurses and staff to speak up
☕ Prevent disruptive behaviors from escalating
☕ Build a healthier culture one conversation at a time

Because healthy work cultures are not built overnight. They’re built in the small moments...every single day.

Woohoo! Now I'm in Denver getting ready to deliver one of my favorite workshops, 8 Essential Skills of a Healthy Team! With...my teammate, Priscilla Meyers!

Healthy work cultures don’t just happen...they’re built. ❤️

In this Coffee Break episode, I talked with Aine Davern, Deputy Director of Nursing at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ireland, about how their team strengthened culture after the pandemic using the Pathway to Excellence framework.

Here’s what I loved most about their approach:

✨ Visible leadership
✨ Meaningful recognition
✨ Shared decision-making
✨ Staff well-being & belonging
✨ Nurses leading change from the frontlines
✨ Addressing incivility quickly instead of ignoring it

One powerful reminder from this conversation:

Culture is everyone’s responsibility.

Not just leadership. Not just HR. Everyone.

When people feel heard, supported, and valued, they show up differently for each other...and for patients.

Three Nurses' Week presentations done - 2 more to go! Humbled and grateful for the opportunity to remind nurses...we didn't choose to become a nurse because it was easy - we chose to become a nurse because what we do matters.

Happy Nurses' Week!

🎙️ New Coffee Break episode just dropped!

One thing I’ve learned about leadership over the years?
Your team pays far more attention to what you DO than what you SAY.

In this episode, I sat down with Jennylynde Renteria-Packham to talk about what it really takes to lead with clarity, confidence, and consistency…especially in stressful healthcare environments.

One of my favorite takeaways was the idea of the “powerful pause.”
That moment where instead of reacting emotionally, you pause, regulate yourself, and respond intentionally. Such a simple concept, but it can completely shift communication, trust, and team culture.

We also talked about:
💙 Self-awareness in leadership
💙 Building psychological safety
💙 Setting healthy boundaries
💙 Empowering your team instead of rescuing them
💙 Why leadership starts with managing your own internal dialogue

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about showing up consistently in a way that makes people feel safe, supported, and respected.

Happy Nurses Week! 💙

To every nurse who stayed late, mentored a new grad, comforted a patient, spoke up for safety, or kept going despite exhaustion…thank you.

This week, let’s celebrate nurses AND reflect on the culture we’re creating for one another.

The future of nursing depends on more than recruitment. It depends on support, mentorship, kindness, and respect.

You may never realize it, but your encouragement could be the reason another nurse stays. 💙

I love this…because it’s such a powerful reminder that success isn’t always loud or flashy.

Sometimes it looks like choosing kindness when it would be easier not to, lifting up our co-workers instead of tearing them down, or simply showing up as the kind of person who makes someone else’s day a little better.

At the end of the day, that’s the kind of impact that really matters.

Let’s be intentional about the good we bring into the world. Every. Single. Day. 💛
