Bridging the Gaps in Adult Education, Technology and Health Literacy - Mccormick Foundation 12/07/2021

The Chicago Citywide Literacy Coalition is Bridging the Gaps in Adult Education, Technology and Health Literacy

When Robert Guzman joined CCLC in 2018, he was the only Career Pathways Navigator at the Near West American Job Center, a comprehensive one-stop hub in Pilsen for adult education providers. He helped to establish the Career Pathways model by working as a liaison between adult students, or job seekers, and the workforce system.

“Seeing the progress people make keeps me motivated. When I joined CCLC, the first people I worked with were receiving unemployment and SNAP benefits. When I saw them again later that year, their English had improved and they had earned their GED to register for a training certificate program,” said Robert.

This year, help us fuel vital organizations like the CCLC with a gift to the McCormick Foundation Communities Program. Give before 2021 comes to a close, and we’ll match every donation at 50 cents on the dollar. Then, we’ll pass 100% of your gift – plus the match to organizations focused on addressing the greatest challenges their communities face, and they need your support to do this important work.

We honor our nation's veterans today for their brave and dedicated service. Our gratitude and thanks mirror Colonel Robert R. McCormick's sentiments, as he thanked First Division veterans at an annual Veterans Day reunion at Cantigny Park.

Congratulations to our very own, Megan Everett, Veterans Program Director, for being named one of Crain’s Chicago Business 2021 Notable Military Veteran Executives.

Megan Everett oversees strategy and grant-making for the Veterans Program. She manages a $3 million grant portfolio in partnerships with veteran and community organizations in Chicago and Illinois. Everett was commissioned as a surface warfare officer from the Cornell University Naval ROTC program in 2000. She served aboard two ships and deployed twice to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the pandemic, Everett coordinated with the USO Illinois to support the National Guard and Team Rubicon to launch COVID testing sites. She also teamed with the Travis Manion Foundation for food insecurity and Thresholds on issues of financial insecurity. She’s increased the number of organizations funded at McCormick focusing on employment, student veterans and wellness from 12 to nearly 50.
