A little over an hour until White Sox first pitch, and SEIU Local 1 stadium workers are ready to do their part to help bring home the win and advance to the ALCS!

Chicago, we are less than a month away from Election Day and we MUST vote for Chicago Public Schools Board of Education candidates who will fight for our students, schools, and the working people who keep them running!

The CPS Board is responsible for budgeting for our schools, setting standards for our teachers and students, and votes on Collective Bargaining Agreements that affect the union workers that keep Chicago running. It is vital that we vote for candidates who will fight for working families and the SEIU IL State Council proudly endorses these candidates for CPS Board.

SEIU Local 1 was proud to join our friends at Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in celebrating 40 years of fighting for immigrant communities!

For four decades, ICIRR has been an incredible partner and a powerful leader in the fight against immigration injustice, organizing communities, defending immigrant families, and making sure working people have a voice.

That work is more important than ever. Local 1 is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with ICIRR as we fight for a Chicago and Illinois where immigrant workers and families are respected, protected, and empowered. It is time for the City of St. Louis to act and select a responsible contractor who will return these union jobs to the working families who were abruptly let go last Christmas. Enough is enough!

Dispute erupts over St. Louis janitorial contract after city cites funding shortfall - St. Louis Business Journal Janitors who were laid off in December 2025 because the city didn't have funds to pay Deep Kleen & Maintenance are trying to get their jobs back. But the city paused awarding a new contract for janitorial work at 1520 Market after a union raised questions.

This past weekend in Toledo, Ohio, SEIU Local 1 members and leaders joined fellow labor leaders and Congresswoman and Labor Champion Representative Marcy Kaptur for an important affordability panel discussion.

Working people from across Toledo shared how the affordability crisis is affecting their families, their workplaces and their ability to get ahead.

Congresswoman Kaptur reaffirmed her commitment to standing up for working people across Northwest Ohio, from protecting the right to organize and bargain collectively to fighting for better wages, safe working conditions and secure retirements.

The stakes are high this election season. Working people deserve leaders who will stand with them, protect their rights and fight to make sure every family has a fair shot at a better future.

When workers have a voice, we have the power to build a stronger future for our communities.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to build a better future. SEIU Local 1 is proud to work alongside our community partners to help formerly incarcerated individuals access strong union jobs, family-sustaining wages, and the stability and dignity that come with a union.

This weekend, we were proud to celebrate 13 individuals who graduated from the Restorative Justice Program, an important milestone as they continue building the futures they deserve. Restorative justice means believing in second chances, investing in people, and ensuring that past involvement with the justice system does not become a lifetime barrier to opportunity.

Yesterday, SEIU Local 1 members and leaders gathered at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing to stand up for HOME RULE over CORPORATE RULE.

The day kicked-off with a press conference, where Local 1 members and leaders spoke about the impact of state preemption and the importance of restoring local decision-making power.

Following the press conference, members and leaders had discussions with state legislators, sharing their experiences and talking about how preemption can limit communities from establishing stronger labor standards and addressing the needs of their residents.

PA 105 of 2015 and PA 98 of 2011 restrict the ability of local governments to pass certain labor laws, limiting local communities from setting stronger standards for workers.

The message is clear: workers and communities deserve a voice, and local governments deserve the power to act on behalf of the people they serve.

This week, over 80 SEIU Local 1 janitors gathered for a leaders meeting, in which members started preparations for the upcoming janitorial contract campaign this spring. Solidarity is power!

Additionally, Treasurer Michael Frerichs recognized Slawomira Chamiga, SEIU Local 1’s recently retired Executive board member and janitor, with over 30 years of membership, for her union activism, as well as marathon running accomplishments! Slawomira was a leader in fighting for better wages, benefits and conditions for workers while working as a janitor. In her spare time, she ran more than 33 marathons on seven continents – yes, this includes Antarctica. She is one of fewer than 500 women in the world to have run marathons on all seven continents.

Next weekend Slawomira will run her first Chicago marathon since retiring as a janitor, and she will run past 173 buildings that SEIU Local 1 members keep clean and safe.

Congratulations Slawomira, and we recognize all SEIU Local 1 workers who keep Chicago running!

Hey, Chicago! Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd. We are voting for Chicago Public Schools Board of Education candidates who will fight for our students, our schools, and the working people who keep them running!

The Board of Education is responsible for the oversight of Chicago Public Schools – one of the largest school districts in the country. The Board approves the annual budget and allocates funds, establishes district-wide goals and standards, and votes on Collective Bargaining Agreements that affect us and our fellow union families in Chicago.

Chicago’s students, parents, and working families deserve a Board that will fight for us. The SEIU IL State Council proudly endorses these candidates for CPS Board.
