Join us Thursday, September 30th at 3:00 PM CT for a discussion on the racial disparities experienced in healthcare and the shortage of minority physicians.

Speaker: Danesha Lewis, PhD(c), MSHA, MS - Minority White Coat Foundation)
Abstract: For many years, minorities have experienced many disparities due to racism and discrimination. The historical injustices that minority Americans have faced have birthed mistrust in the healthcare system. African Americans have remained lowest in many health disparities for many years, like cardiovascular disease and hypertension. However, when new diseases arise like COVID-19, African Americans seem to still fall in last place compared to other races. The many years of disparities showed the world why minorities need more support. Due to the mistreatment of minorities and mistrust in healthcare, there is a strong need for minorities providers. There is less than 10 percent of minorities in the various healthcare fields. That data is why the Minority White Coat Foundation was born. Pipelines to multiple careers, including healthcare, are leaky and fuel the lack of minorities we need. Statistics show that minorities who have a provider of the same race have better health outcomes. The Minority White Coat Foundation provides resources and programs to make sure minorities successfully advance through the pipeline of healthcare. With more minorities in healthcare, African Americans would not be twice as likely to be hospitalized or die for COVID-19. If there were more minority representation in healthcare, African Americans would not have so much hesitancy in the treatments of COVID-19 or the information regarding the pandemic. The goal is to close the disparities gap minorities face by increasing the number of minorities in the different healthcare fields.

In 2020 HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus affected 37.6 million people globally. With its high prevenance also comes to heighten stigma and emotional distress. This directly affects the overall quality of an individual’s life. HIV attacks the immune system, which results in a declination of a person’s physical state; however, that is not the only effect that HIV has. HIV can affect multiple areas of a person’s life, including the psychological, social, and spiritual areas. One of the most common mental health conditions that is correlated with HIV is depression. This presentation applies the Biopsychosocial- Spiritual Model to self-care to promote proper self-advocacy in all areas to decrease depressive symptoms. It is important to ensure that biological needs are met within this population, but it should also be encouraged that people understand the importance of being an advocate for themselves. Self-Advocacy can be demonstrated through assessing service qualities, understanding triggers, and coping.
