The town of Herculaneum was buried at the same time as Pompeii. (79AD) There are plenty of surviving wall frescos in both towns. However in Herculaneum there are many fascinating examples of the underlying line work the artists used as guides when originally painting the frescos. This line work was exposed in areas where the frescos detached from the wall during (and after) the eruption.

So this is the building I helped excavate when I volunteered on a dig in Pompeii back in the summer of 2001. It’s in the northwest corner of the city. (Regio 6 Insula 1 Building 15)
One of the coolest things I’ve ever done. 5+ week dig. Hot. Discovered a bunch of stuff that hadn’t seen the light of day since 79AD or earlier. Slept in a tent. They didn’t feed us enough. Lost weight. Lotta wine. Would do it again in a second. Always thrilled/humbled to have the opportunity to visit the fascinating city of Pompeii.

This might be my favorite ancient thing I’ve ever seen at any site. This is an exterior shop sign in ancient Herculaneum. It advertises 4 different types of wine available and their corresponding prices.
BONUS: directly beneath is a faded advertisement for a gladiator contest in the nearby town of Nola.
How cool is that?

The Stromboli police use golf carts.
The narrow streets here are so steep there’s no way you’ll out run ‘em. Plan your getaway downhill and maybe you’ll have a chance.
