With a winter storm approaching South Carolina, many people are excited about the possibility of snow. While it can be beautiful, we want to share what this kind of weather truly means for local farmers.

For farms like Double K Ranch, winter storms bring real challenges. Freezing temperatures can cause water lines and tanks to ice over, requiring constant checks so livestock have access to fresh water. Animals still need to be fed on schedule—often more than usual—as they burn extra calories just trying to stay warm.

Ice and sleet also create dangerous conditions. Frozen ground, icy gates, and slick roads make everyday chores harder and increase the risk of injury. Unlike states that regularly see snow, South Carolina farms aren’t equipped with infrastructure built for prolonged cold, making winter storms especially demanding.

Winter weather also increases labor and costs—more bedding to keep animals dry, longer workdays, and frequent livestock checks throughout the day and night.
At Double K Ranch, snow days don’t mean days off. They mean extra preparation, extra care, and trusting God to watch over our animals and everyone working through the cold.

We appreciate your prayers, understanding, and support—and we encourage you to support local farmers during times like these. Buying local and showing grace goes a long way in helping small farms continue doing what they love.

Stay warm and stay safe, friends!
