🌰 Tree of the Month: American Chestnut | Castanea dentata
Once called the "redwood of the East," this native giant shaped forests from Maine to Georgia. Chestnut blight nearly wiped it out in the early 1900s, but restoration efforts are growing.
📏 Height: 60-100 ft at maturity
🌿 Lifespan: 100+ years (historically much longer)
🍃 Leaves: long, glossy, and toothed, up to 8 in
🌼 Blooms: creamy catkins in June and July
🌰 Fruit: 2-3 nuts inside a spiny bur, ripening in fall
☀️ Sun: full sun
🌎 Native range: eastern U.S., zones 4-8
Wildlife love the nuts, and so do people. Keep an eye out for burs on the ground this time of year.

Bosson Park just got greener and a lot more resilient. 🌳
Thanks to an amazing volunteer group from Mass General Hospital, we planted 3 new trees and 60 native plants (grasses, groundcovers, and shrubs) to rebuild a natural divider in the park. This new bed will help keep a slice of nature intact, protected by a fence our Tree Warden put up just for this purpose.
Huge thanks to Tree Warden Bladimir Hernandez, our Chelsea DPW LPWS crew, and the MGH volunteers for making this happen, and to Charlie Giuffrida, Director of Athletic Infrastructure and Sports Tourism, for connecting us all in the first place.
More green, more shade, more habitat, more Chelsea. 💚

🚨 Emergency Tree Removal at Carter Park 🚨
We have a green ash tree near the playground with a severe trunk split starting where the main branches spread which is a serious safety hazard. The playground and adjacent walkway have been closed off with caution tape until removal is complete.
Removal is scheduled for Tuesday, 9/22.
If you're walking to school via Orange St, please use extra caution and stay clear of taped-off areas.
Thank you for your patience as we keep the park safe for everyone!

🌳 Tree of the Month: American Elm 🌳
Towering, resilient, and unmistakably majestic, the American Elm is a Chelsea icon, and it's also the official state tree of Massachusetts. Growing 60-100 ft tall and living up to 300 years, these giants once lined streets across America before Dutch Elm disease took its toll. The ones still standing today are true survivors.
Look for reddish-green flower clusters in early spring, serrated green leaves through summer, and deep gray-brown furrowed bark that tells the story of decades of growth. As fall approaches, keep an eye out for those leaves turning a beautiful golden yellow, one of the season's best shows.
Next time you pass one, give it a moment of appreciation — you're standing under a living piece of Massachusetts history. 🍃

Every drop that hits our streets ends up somewhere, usually Chelsea Creek or the Mystic River. This National Water Quality Month, we're talking about one of our favorite low-tech fixes: trees. 🌳💧
A mature street tree slows rain down, filters it, and sends a lot of it back into the ground instead of the storm drain. That's exactly what Chelsea is testing with our partners at the Mystic River Watershed Association: a Tree Trenches project bringing more trees (and less flooding) to our streets.
