The NREA (National Rural Education Association) was originally founded as the Department of Rural Education in 1907. Expand rural publications and services.
It is the oldest established national organization of its kind in the United States. To Serve as a national advocate and representative for rural education at all levels: Local-State-Regional-National. Take positions on issues involving rural education. Enlist a greater participation of the Executive Committee and Standing Committees in the development of issue papers and policy development. Provide coordination, at the national level, for rural education programs and activities. Maintain liaison with other national organizations related to rural education. Strengthen the working relationship with U.S. Department of Education in the recognition of outstanding rural schools. Provide leadership for rural education related conferences and workshops. Provide national conference annually. Provide continued support and leadership for annual NREA Rural Education Research Forum and Annual Rural Teacher Symposium. Provide a forum for all those involved in public education in rural areas–including teachers, administrators, board members, and members of the rural community at large whereby they may come together professionally and exchange ideas. Actively promote membership and active participation of teachers, administrators, board members and the rural community at large. Maintain state delegate system. Maintain affiliate membership system representative of individual states.

It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that our colleague and friend, John Glasgow, passed away yesterday, Wednesday 10/07/26 as the result of a tragic accident.
This is a devastating loss for our AIRSS, ROE26 and NREA family. John was a valued member of our team, and we know this news will be difficult for all of us to process. As shared in this joint message John’s impact on the rural school community extended beyond a single entity, and his commitment, care and support of rural and small schools were felt globally.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with John’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
We recognize that each of us processes grief differently, and encourage you to reach out to your own circle of family friends and faith for the support you might need. As we learn more about arrangements and the family’s wishes, we will share that information when appropriate.
Please keep John’s family and loved ones in your thoughts.

Staffing is one of the hardest challenges rural districts face, and planning for 2027-28 is already underway. To help rural leaders plan ahead, NREA is hosting the Rural Workforce Virtual Summit on November 10 with our partner, Unlimited Instruction - UI.
This 90-minute virtual conversation brings rural district leaders together to discuss the staffing and workforce challenges in their communities right now.
You'll hear from NREA leadership and district practitioners about what they're seeing in their communities and the questions guiding their workforce planning for next year.
The session is built for the leaders who shape budgets, staffing strategy, operations, and district-level decisions.
