A new study on AI-assisted coding suggests that while tools like code generators can boost short-term output, they may come at the cost of deeper understanding.

Developers who relied on AI while learning new tools performed worse on tasks that required code comprehension, debugging, and recall.

The findings indicate that AI often replaces active problem-solving with prompting, leading to gaps in conceptual knowledge.

Researchers found no significant improvement in overall speed, despite increased reliance on AI.

The study warns that widespread adoption without careful use could create long-term skill deficits, especially as developers ship code they may struggle to fully understand or maintain.
