For a pair of artists whose music largely sounds nothing alike, Primus’ Les Claypool and Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools have more shared history than fans might realize.

Over the last three decades, they’ve split top billings on festival lineups, played together with the likes of Gov’t Mule (captured on the 'Deepest End' live album), and even lived in the same zip code as neighbors in Northern California. Throughout that time, each one has held down the low end for various bands that have managed to sustain their own cultural ecosystems far from the mainstream.

This coming weekend, Claypool and Schools will cross paths once again for All Good Now at Merriweather Post Pavilion, where Dave will log two nights with Widespread Panic and Les will perform with his Claypool Gold triumvirate of Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. Ahead of the festival, the two bass buds caught up to talk about everything from the good ol’ days to the enduring nature of counterculture to “undulating cephalopods.” They also shared some progress reports on Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring’s health and the status of Claypool’s long-delayed album with Billy Strings.
