Dearest Community,

As many of you may know, our beloved Henk Brandt passed away last Saturday night at home with his beautiful wife and the founder of The Sophia Institute, Carolyn Rivers. He was instrumental in founding The Sophia Institute, served on the founding Board and Faculty, offering workshops on mindfulness, poetry readings, and supporting the expansion of the work for twenty-four years.

Henk’s legacy is rich and varied. He is the author of Sleeping with Sophia, a collection of poems, a spiritual memoir, and a daybook, Dharma Fortune Cookies. He represents a new breed of speakers and authors who are working to bring soul and heart into the way we conduct ourselves in the world. A mindfulness counselor for fifteen years, Henk enabled his clients to find "the light inside the dark, to dwell on the frontier of unknowing and to engage in mature intimate relationships that are consciously committed to mutual growth.”

We will gather on July 27 for a Celebration of Life. at St. Stephens Church, Noon, followed by an Inurnment at Mepkin Abbey at 4:00pm.

The Transformative Nature of Life and Death: Embracing Life’s Impermanence

If you knew you only had one year left to live…how would you live your life?
What would you do? Or not do?
Who would you spend your precious time with?
How would you want the last days of your life to be?

We all have an expiration date, yet we often act as if we’re going to live forever. We make elaborate plans for birth, yet often let death just happen. It easily becomes a medical event rather than a human event.

We live in a death averse society, yet death as we know it informs our lives. Our ability to be present with death offers us an opportunity to awaken and live life fully. Viewing life through this lens provides us a beautiful gift to be awake and aware of what really matters. We learn to live our lives authentically…as our true selves.

Your life in physical form will end at some point. You have a choice how you live. Please join Bonnie Compton, Conscious Living & Dying Coach and End of Life Doula, as she takes you on a journey of conscious living and dying. She’ll help you discover how you want to spend your remaining precious time on Earth. Bonnie will also offer an opportunity for you to learn and explore end of life options, the importance of end-of-life planning and practical aspects of caregiving for a loved one as they make their final transition.

Love and Lament: A Time to Grieve

If “grief is love’s souvenir”* it’s from a trip that we didn’t want to take. And yet, the experience of being human is an experience of loss and longing; grief is on the itinerary. Some spiritual traditions focus so much on light and transcendence that we may feel there is something wrong with us for moving through the dark emotions of loss.

In this brief workshop, Laura Collins will guide you through some of the choppy waters of grieving, whether the loss you’re feeling is from a death, the loss of a relationship or career, our changing bodies and health, or grief for the great suffering of the world’s people and our planet. With meditation, writing prompts, the support of community, and permission to feel how you feel, you will be invited to experience the profound love that underlies all grief and can guide us back home.
