If you’re bored tomorrow morning with nothing else to do, I’ll be appearing on Live5’s Palmetto Life show sometime between 9:00 and 10:00 am. We taped it last week, and I give the host of the show, Emilie Zuhowski, a little mini Revolutionary War tour. It was freezing that day, and my lips were cold, so I hope you can understand me! 😜 They wanted it to be casual and seem live, so we only did one take at each location! I’ll post the link in the comments of the actual segment when that becomes available. Doesn’t seem cheap to me. It sounds delicious! A little skimpy on the meat maybe. This is also a very specific receipt for the 18th century. Usually there’s a lot more interpretation needed.
On your next snowy day, consider making this Receipt for a Cheap Soup from our collections! By using seasonal ingredients, this 1778 meat-and-vegetable soup recipe promises that for just a penny a serving, one can make “a very wholesome and pleasant food, and will serve very well at the Tables of the Rich, as well as the Poor.” The soup is made of half a pound of meat, split peas, turnips, Jerusalem artichokes, potatoes, onion, and celery, with oatmeal, flour, or ground rice to thicken. You can elevate the dish with warming spices or herbs.
Although this broadside was published for use in training camps of the British army, it reflects the new ideas about a healthful diet that were also circulating in American camps during the Revolutionary War.

The latest installment I’ve written of the great impact South Carolina had on the outcome of the Revolutionary War. In this one, I reflect on events in which we’ve already celebrated the 250th, and even 260th anniversary.
With 250th anniversary of the American Revolution coming in 2026, much had already happened in SC
